Description:

A rare William and Mary turtle shell and gilt mounted striking and pull-quarter repeating bracket clock, by this good London maker.   The moulded case with caddy top and gilt bun feet, cast door escutcheons, carrying handle and baluster style finials is veneered with under-painted red turtle shell throughout, including the elegantly pierced sound frets to the front door and glazed sides.

The 7 inch square brass dial has a silvered and engraved chapter ring with cherub and wing spandrels, the matted centre is inset with the date aperture amidst decorative scrollwork.

The hour striking movement retains the original verge escapement with pull-quarter repeat on three bells. The elaborately pierced apron and back-plate is engraved with the signature cartouche amongst flowing scrolls and floral decoration.

Thomas Taylor Junior was apprenticed to his father of the same name in 1678.  On his father’s death he succeeded to the business in Holborn where he established a distinguished reputation culminating in him being appointed Master in 1720.
