Description:
A fine George III wall hanging bracket clock by this eminent maker in the traditional style introduced by him. The mahogany case has a shallow arch with three mounts supporting flame finials and finely pierced fretwork in between. Below the hood is a pull forward moulded bracket. The silvered brass dial is signed in the shallow arch and engraved with Arabic numerals and outer Roman minutes. There is a strike/silent option adjacent to ten o’clock. The twin fusee, eight day duration movement has a verge escapement and hour strike. John Ellicott is recorded as working in Swithins Alley, Royal Exchange. He was born in 1706 and succeeded to his father’s business. He was one of the most eminent English makers and appointed Fellow of the Royal Society. Examples of his work are included in collections and museums throughout the world.
